Thursday at a press conference at the Primature, Ludner Remarais, the Director General of the Bureau of Mines provided an update on the situation in the mining sector in Haiti, saying that things are clear, they were currently no mining operation in Haiti.

"The mining cooperation with the exterior is going well [...] we advance towards the development of this sector," said Ludner Remarais, noting that the Bureau of Mines, with the support of national and international partners, including a misson of accompaniment of the World Bank is currently in the country working on a framework law laying down the operating conditions of the Haitian subsoil resources, noting that the legal framework was a priority "[...] establish a mining law, which must defend the interests of the state and meets the expectations of the sector [...] We have an old 37-years mining law..." adding that this law intended to protect the interests of the State in the environmental, social and fiscal plan, is almost completed and will be sent shortly to the Executive for appropriate action.

He also announced the creation of a Directorate of Bureau of Mines, which will have to specifically address the delicate issue of the mining cadastre. Moreover scholarships will be awarded to students of the Faculty of Science, to provide Haiti, of competent staff to contribute to the development of the sector.

Ludner Remarais noted that several countries had responded favorably to the solicitations of Haiti to provide assistance and experience in this sector. He informed that a Chilean team would soon be in Haiti to conduct to the assessment of needsof the sector and Ecuador, a country with great expertise in mining, had also promised technical support to Haiti.

He revealed that a contract had been signed with the South African firm "Council of Geosciences" to assess the potential of all mineral resources in Haiti, including the development of a map of mineral resources and evaluation of a map of mineral resources and an assessment of the economic value of reserves.

According to the Director General of the Bureau of Mines "These are milestones that we set to walk towards the revival of the mining sector [...] It is important that this sector is developed because it could help solve the problem of unemployment and assistantship [international dependence]."
