Haiti - Social : 10,500 solidarity baskets distributed in 19 precarious neighborhoods

From 20 to 27 November 2013, 10,500 baskets of solidarity were distributed in 19 new sites in the capital, as part of the support of the Government to the most vulnerable families in the popular neighborhoods of Port-au-Prince through the establishment of social programs to reduce extreme poverty among the population.

This distributionfalls within the framework of the implementation of the special intervention plan against extreme poverty implemented by the Administration Martelly and the Government Lamothe on the occasion of the holiday season and New Year.

Heads of families residing in Simon Pelé, Grand-Ravine, Martissant, Savane Pistache, Cité Neuf, Cité L’Éternel, Fontamara, Fort Mercredi, Martisant, Nan Sion, Sanatorium, Ti Bois, Village de Dieu, are part of the new beneficiaries of this social healing program. Between 500 and 1,000 kits were distributed in each of these vulnerable areas.

Launched in Cité Soleil at the beginning of November, this special intervention program specifically targets mothers living in extreme poverty and extends over a period of six months (November 2013-April 2014). Fifty precarious neighborhoods of the metropolitan area of Port-au-Prince are affected by this program which plans to reach 50,000 heads of households.

In addition to the distribution of food rations, this special intervention plan includes the integration of more than a hundred mothers by zone in the program Ti Manman Cheri . Literacy classes will also be available to the beneficiaries.

As part of this program, the Government pays special attention to people with disabilities. Solar street lights will be installed in the targeted neighborhoods. Some damaged housing will be rehabilitated along with other planned interventions (stationary restaurants or mobile canteens, community garden, sanitation and waste management, etc...)

The Office of the Minister for Human Rights and the Fight against Extreme Poverty coordinates this special program implemented in partnership with other agencies.

Using concrete measures, the Government seeks to reduce significantly the number of people suffering from hunger, enroll a maximum number of children and make accessible health care to the residents of these neighborhoods. Income-generating activities will also be deployed in insecure areas of different cities of the country during the holiday season.
