Haiti - Education : Educational Cartoons produced in Haiti by Haitians

"Lakou Kajou" is a series of educational cartoons designed for young Haitian children produced in Haiti by Haitians and other foreign professionals. These cartoons showcase "Lili and Tilou" twin brother and sister, who tell amusing stories taking place in their "Lakou". The special feature of this series lies in its anchor, which reflects the Haitian culture and considers the living conditions of Haitians.

This series or program is part of "Media-Children-Haiti", the first Haitian multimedia project aimed at reach young children and their families through traditional media (television, radio, and newspapers) as well as through the new digital media. Developed by Haitian professionals, this project will include a strong component in awareness, to reach the poorest children through attractive and educational programs, in order to provoke positive changes in their knowledge and in their behavior.

This project was developed by "Blue Butterfly Collaborative", a group of professional educators dedicated to the structuring and development of local capacities, in order to implement educational projects on a large scale. This cartoon series is intended for preschool and primary school age and is designed to support key educational objectives in four areas: basic reading, socio-emotional well-being, basic math and arts and culture.

A meeting was recently held to the Unesco hall of the cultural center of the FOKAL between several organizations interested in this series which allowed present the material (videos and educational sheets) and determine the mechanisms and necessary steps towards a partnership between these bodies and Blue Butterfly, for the distribution of a first series of 6 episodes.

It remains to find the means to sustain the project so that Lily and Tilou can find their place in the collective imagination of young Haitian children.
