Haiti - Security : D-1, simulation exercise of an earthquake followed by a tsunami

Friday, May 6, 2016, in Cap Haitien will be held the SIMEX 2016, a simulation exercise of an earthquake followed by a tsunami, at the Northern Department. The course consists of a tabletop exercise at the Centre for Emergency Departmental Operations (COUD) of North; an evacuation of schools towards the point of aggregation and a rescue clearing site.

The SIMEX will take place on the sites of the North Delegation, the Mayor of Cap-Haitien, North COUD, the Gymnasium of the Champ de Mars, on the site of the former big prison and on 3 evacuation routes the streets 15, 18 and 20.

This important exercise will involve this year the Ministry of Interior and Territorial Communities, the Directorate of Civil Protection, the Departmental Delegation of the North, the Mayor of Cap-Haitien, the Departmental Committee of Management of risks and disasters, the Communal Committee and the local committee of risk management, the Haitian Red Cross (HRC), the National Police of Haiti (PNH), MINUSTAH, the Fire Department, NGOs, volunteers Rangers of the Civil Protection, the Scouts of Haiti, the community response teams (EIC), schools of the city center (staff and students), the United Nations development Programme (UNDP), UNESCO and the private sector locally.

Main objectives of the 2016 SIMEX :

  • Appropriation of seismic contingency plans by the leaders of Emergency Management ;

  • Training of actors involved in the implementation of contingency plans ;

  • Developing a culture of management of the emergency of type earthquake and tsunami in Haiti, particularly in the Great North ;

  • Sensitizing the population to the risk of earthquake and tsunami in the North.
