Haiti - Petit-Goâve : Sinking of transport sailboat «Merci Sylvia»

According to Canon Guisnol, one of the crew members, the transport sailboat «Merci Sylvia» carrying on board 418 bags of coal belonging to 26 owners from the 2nd Communal Section "Les Basses" of Petit-Trou de Nippes, had to go to Mariani and anchored in the harbor of Petit-Goâve in the night from Saturday 10 to Sunday, March 11, while waiting for better maritime conditions.

Sunday at around 5:00 am, subject to strong winds and a strong swell, the rope of the anchor broke driving the sailboat in the bay of Petit-Goâve where, without visibility, it violently aground.

"The people of Petit-Goâve who rescued us were much more motivated by the idea of robe coal rather than really help us," said Guisnol, who also deplored the lack of intervention by local authorities and officials of the Maritime Service and Navigation of Haiti (SEMANAH).

Let's stressing that the four sailors : Canon Guisnol, Nelson Fritzny, Dieuseul Pierre, Adrien Jean Baptiste were all four safe and sound of this shipwreck.

A port citizen suggested that a lighthouse be placed on the bay or on the coast to guide ships at night.
