Haiti - Environment : Reforestation and treatment of the gully Nan Baryè

The Japanese Embassy in Haiti has proceeded to the inauguration of the "Project of Treatment and of Reforestation of the gully Nan Baryè" to the Canapé-Vert. The project amounting to US$104.955 was realized by the National Organization of Young Professionals to Save Haiti (ONJPSH), a Non Governmental Organisation and is part of the program of "Assistance to Micro-Local Projects contributing to human security" (APL) of the Japanese Government.

This project can be summarized in four main points:

  • The protection and correction of about 1,000 linear meters of gully

  • The elevation of 70 Drywall

  • The planting of 52,000 seedlings of citrus

  • The acquisition of equipment necessary for carrying out this works

This is not the first time the Japanese government is working with ONJPSH, indeed in 2009 the Canoe gully of the Morne L'Hôpital had already been the subject of a bio-mechanical treatment with the financial cooperation of the Japan.

The gully Nan Baryè it also takes birth in the Morne l'Hôpital and is a tributary of the Canot gully. Hence the need to develop a plan of protection much more relevant for the communities of Canapé Vert, the Japanese government has understood and responded to this emergency.

The effects of treatment and of the reforestation of the gully Nan Baryè, will be known at short-and long-term. The localities of Nan Baryè, Ti Ginen, Moransi, Meleri, Ravine Ocha and Sainte Mariewill experience lower losses of plants and livestock during heavy rains, see dead when rains cause floods and landslides. And thanks to the speed reduction of rainwater and of the fact that the solid particles will be retained upstream by the en amont par les protections.

In addition, the definitive biological structures, (the citrus), are necessary for ensure not only the ecological balance of watersheds in the area, but also the survival of the inhabitants of the area by ensuring their purchasing power. In this context, the project has achieved four fundamental objectives:

  • The prevention of risks of disaster in the zone of the Canapé-Vert

  • The protection of the inhabitants of the area

  • The development of a strategy of securing of the areas corrected and protected

  • The creation of jobs with high intensity of labor
