Haiti - FLASH : The OAS does not recognize the Venezuelan elections, Haiti abstains

Tuesday at the 48th General Assembly of the Organization of American States (OAS) held in Washington DC, the resolution on the illegitimacy of the electoral process and the exclusion of Venezuela from the OAS, proposed by the United States United, was presented by Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Mexico and Peru, co-sponsored by Costa Rica, Guatemala and Paraguay was put to the vote by member states https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-24580-haiti-flash-in-favor-of-venezuela-haiti-could-be-the-target-of-the-trump-administration.html

With a simple majority of 19 votes for, 4 against and 11 abstentions, the OAS recognizes the illegitimacy of the electoral process in Venezuela as stipulated in Article 1 of the resolution "the electoral process as implemented in Venezuela, concludes the lack of legitimacy since it does not respect international standards, that all Venezuelan political actors did not participate, and that it was achieved without the necessary guarantees for a free, fair, transparent and democratic process. "

However, the number of votes is insufficient to obtain the exclusion of Venezuela, a vote that requires 2/3 of the Member States (24 votes), but these 19 votes are sufficient to allow progress towards the exclusion of the Bolivarian Republic of OAS. The resolution will now be transmitted to the Permanent Council before another subsequent vote.

On Tuesday, Haiti preferred to abstain to minimize the diplomatic consequences rather than vote FOR and openly pledge allegiance to the US or to vote AGAINST and openly challenge the Trump Administration

Voted FOR (19) :

The Bahamas, Saint Lucia, Argentina, Barbados, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Costa Rica, Guatemala, Guyana, Honduras, Panama, Jamaica, United States, Mexico, Paraguay, Dominican Republic and Peru.

Against (4) :

Venezuela, Bolivia, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Dominica

Abstaining (11) :

Ecuador, Nicaragua, El Salvador, Haiti, Belize, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Trinidad and Tobago, Antigua y barbuda, Suriname, Uruguay, Granada.

Experts in international relations believe that the abstention of Haiti is an important change of position, while Haiti openly supported Venezuela, for them it means that Haiti has "implicitly" voted against Venezuela, but also against United States hoping to get Haiti's vote.

However, on the Venezuelan side, diplomatic sources say they understand Haiti's position and say that Haiti has not let go the Bolivarian Republic or change position.
