Haiti - FLASH : Teachers and officials of the UEH under the threat of attacks

A small group which identifies itself as the « Mouvman Etidyan Revolisyonè Ayisyen » (MERA) has published a leaflet on social networks in which it threatens in particular the rector of the State University of Haiti (UEH) and the Deans of the various faculties specifying "We know their homes, places of leisure, daily routes, the restaurants they frequent, where their wives work and the schools that their children attend..."

Governing this leaflet of explicit threats, 70 professors from the UEH have published a note of solidarity which we invite you to share.

Solidarity note :

"A group of so-called students, called Mouvman Etidyan Revolisyonè Ayisyen (MERA) has just published a leaflet calling for attacks on professors and executives of the State University of Haiti (UEH) on the grounds that they are not satisfied with their way of managing the University. The situation is serious and we, the undersigned, teachers of the UEH, strongly condemn the recurrent threats made by this tiny group. The threat takes on a particular dimension since it extends to the parents and families of colleagues. They threaten them everywhere: home, places of leisure, daily routes etc...

Nothing can justify such practices which amount to banditry.

The lives of our colleagues are in danger, because these threats place them in difficult psychological and family situations that prevent them from continuing their activities properly.

The State University of Haiti is and must remain a space for the production of knowledge in order to improve the living conditions of the population and not a place where a small group of fascist reactionaries who claim to be revolutionary dictate their madness.

We, signatory colleagues, want to support the UEH in its mission of promoting academic excellence, the development of scientific research and technological innovation for the benefit of the population.

We cannot take such excesses lightly and invite all students to pull themselves together and condemn with the last energy the ill-lit elements which do not honor the values of Peace, solidarity and justice which inspire our mission."
