Haiti - FLASH : In 2019, the roads in Haiti made 3,837 victims (partial assessment)

Garnel Michel Coordinator of the Haitian organization Technical and Operational Services to Stop Accidents (STOP-Accidents), informs us that from December 31, 2018 to December 31, 2019, 2,260 traffic accidents were reported on the roads in Haiti, which caused at least 3,837 victims : 520 dead and 3,317 injured, most of them young...

Arcahaie, Léogane, Saint-Marc, Cap-Haïtien, Plaine du Cul de Sac, Mariani, Gressier, Delmas, Ouanaminthe, Airport road, Morne Tapion, Côte des Arcadins among others, are the main communes and areas where these accidents were registered during the year

This assessment was carried out in partnership with the National Ambulance Center (CAN) and the Haitian Red Cross. However, due to the lack of a STOP-Accident, on the one hand, it is not able to monitor the state of health of the injured, some of whom die as a result of their injuries and are not counted, and on the other hand certain areas of the national territory are not yet covered by the STOP-Accidents networks.

STOP-Accidents, which recalls that road accidents are among the leading causes of death in Haiti. continues to ask the authorities concerned to take measures to reduce the risk of accidents on the public highway, in particular by: strengthening the police force, installing public lighting, moving certain markets and putting in place in public transport in general and in motorcycle taxis in particular.
