Haiti - FLASH : 4.1 million Haitians will be food insecure, between March and June 2020

According to the latest Early Warning and Action Report on Food Security and Agriculture published by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO), nearly 4.1 million Haitians (40 % of the Haitian population), will be affected by food insecurity, between March and June 2020.

This is an increase of 10.8% compared to the end of 2019 (3.7 million Haitians) and the second after that of 32% compared to the end of 2018 (source United Nations Coordination Office humanitarian affairs - OCHA).

To combat the food insecurity that threatens Haiti in 2020, the FAO encourages the distribution, by March, of climate-resilient seeds to farmers to avoid missing the spring agricultural campaign which begins in March, which could worsen the situation.

Faced with the food insecurity that threatens Haiti in 2020, the FAO encourages to supervise vulnerable households through the distribution of vegetable seeds, plant material and training in good agricultural practices in urban and peri-urban areas of Haiti .

To combat food insecurity in Haiti during 2020, the FAO recommends implementing cash-for-work activities for the most vulnerable, in order to rehabilitate and protect agricultural infrastructure in the areas affected by Drought.

As an urgent action to address the food insecurity that threatens Haiti during the year 2020, the FAO recommends distributing fishing tackle and equipment to households living near lakes and coastal areas.
