Haiti - Culture : Thousands of works of art destroyed in a fire

In the night from Saturday to Sunday March 1, around 2:00 am, a fire broke out in the studio of artist Guyodo ("Atelye timoun klere") which spread to the Grand-Rue, destroying not less than 2,000 works by the artist, the bulk of his collection, including several major works that had won international exhibition honors, notably at the Museum of Brooklyn and in Liverpool, Brussels, Geneva among others. Works by Papa Da also on the scene were destroyed in the incident as well as those of many other artists.

If the artist does not believe that this is a criminal act, he nevertheless evokes the area of ​​the Ghetto where the gangs of Baz Pilat and those of the Village-de-Dieu clash with their lots of collateral damage...

Reacting in a note to this news the Centre d'Art writes "It is with great pain that the Centre d'Art learned the news of the fire that affected 'Atis rezistans' on the night of February 29 to March 1st.

Thousands of works of art by street artists, particularly Guyodo and Papa Da, have gone up in smoke.

Fortunately there was no loss of life, but families are affected by the fire.

The Centre d'Art wishes courage to the artists and the victims and intends to provide support in one way or another."
