Haiti - Security : Radio Télé Caraïbes under threats...

In a note, Radio Télé Caraïbes (RTVC) alerts the national and international community in general and the police authorities in particular of threats of all kinds to which it has been the subject for some time.

It informed them that "these threats have been amplified on social networks with the entry on the scene of several anonymous organizations which announce imminent attacks against the radio building in street Chavannes."

Radio Télé Caraïbes deplores "that manipulative hands with shameful and unacknowledged projects are trying to destroy the image and reputation of the station embodying the ideological plurality of RTVC by equating the station with the political party in power [...] RTVC reminds everyone that the past struggles for the institution of democracy in the country are not new and the station has a legacy of struggle dating back seven decades. As a result, it remains unshakeable and far from being intimidated by these obscurantist threats, on the contrary, they push it to redouble its efforts in order to continue to guide the Haitian people towards plural and nuanced ideas while remaining at their side."

Reacting to these threats, the Office for the Protection of the Citizen (OPC) condemns these intimidations wherever they come from and expresses its solidarity with the management and all the staff of the station, stressing "Threatening a media for information and opinions it disseminates is contrary to the values and freedoms enshrined in the Constitution and the various agreements, treaties and conventions of which Haiti is a State party. The Citizen Protection Office calls on the authors of these threats to respect the rules of the democratic game."

For its part, the United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) expresses concern about threats against the RTVC and recalls "There is no stability without freedom of expression and without free, independent and pluralist media."
