Haiti - Environment : «Nou pral plante dlo», attacking deforestration

As part of the reforestation campaign of the Ministry of the Environment, schoolchildren, young academics, community leaders and members of civil society organizations have been participating for more than two months in the planting of several thousand tree seedlings. fruit and forest trees under the slogan "Nou pral plante dlo".

Under the leadership of the Minister of the Environment Abner September, this campaign is carried out throughout the national territory thanks to the coordination of the 10 Departmental Directors of the Ministry while the Germplasm Centers, technical infrastructures for the multiplication or propagation of superior varieties of forest and fruit species https://www.icihaiti.com/en/news-24034-icihaiti-environment-towards-the-construction-of-the-7th-plant-propagation-center.html , ensure availability seedlings for the success of the campaign.

Speaking on the importance of this reforestation campaign, Minister Septembre explained that the slogan "Nou pral plane dlo" "[...] means planting trees to protect the soil, increase the rainfall of places, facilitate greater infiltration of rainwater and reduce runoff on slopes which leads to land erosion, causing serious damage and disturbances downstream (plain, town, coast and sea)."

Adding "'Nou pral plante dlo' also implies soil conservation to stabilize the land and facilitate better use thereof. It is also the promotion of agroforestry, where appropriate, associated with the production of coffee, cocoa and cane. Finally, it is a return to the good practices which were once the strength of the Haitian peasantry, in terms of food, economic and environmental security."
