The City of Gatineau adopts the name of Jean-Alfred, Haitian oforigin, as the commemorative toponym of a new collector street of the Coeur de la Cité project. It thus pays tribute to this teacher who became a Quebec politician who had a considerable influence in the region.

"Mr. Jean Alfred has marked the history of our city and is an important figure in the development of the Gatineau sector. The City celebrates it and highlights its history through its toponymy and thus promotes the feeling of pride of the population. The street, in the heart of the Gatineau sector, will proudly bear this toponym by honoring the cultural diversity that has contributed to the development of the territory [...]" declared Ms. Myriam Nadeau, President of the Ville de Gatineau toponymy committee, .

Jean Alfred, born March 10, 1940 in Ouanaminthe (Haiti) died July 20, 2015 in Gatineau.

Jean Alfred entered politics as a municipal councilor for the City of Gatineau in 1975 and 1976.

Jean Alfred was the first black elected to the National Assembly of Quebec in 1976 as Member of Parliament for Papineau until 1980.

He had a considerable influence on the development of the Gatineau region. He was notably involved in the construction of the hospital and the Gatineau airport as well as in the development of highway 50. He also worked on various files, including those of local road infrastructure, the school d'Angers and social housing in Gatineau and Buckingham. The bridge that crosses the Petite Nation river between Lochaber and Plaisance was named in his honor in February 2019 by the Commission de toponymie du Québec.
