Haiti - Crisis : 4.4 million Haitians will need humanitarian aid in 2021

Analysis of humanitarian needs in Haiti revealed that more than 4.4 million Haitians [300,000 more than the previous year], or nearly 40% of the population, will be food insecure and 3.5 million of them will have multidimensional vulnerabilities and need humanitarian assistance in 2021.

The year 2020 was marked by the Covid-19 pandemic, the passage of tropical storm Laura and socio-political events. It was also marked by numerous acts of violence which increased in the second half of the year. In a context weakened by the tensions of the previous two years, these events contributed to a further deterioration of the country's economic situation, reducing the purchasing power of a large part of the population and increasing the vulnerability of a large number of people. Haitian. In November 2020, 69% of households reported a drop in their income. Most of them estimate this decrease at more than 60% (United Nations Haiti, January 2021).

Most vulnerable population groups :

Women and girls (of childbearing age, pregnant / breastfeeding and adolescent girls, single mothers);

Children (from 0 to 5 and of school age);

Seniors ;

People with disabilities:

People in displacement situation (displaced, returned, expelled, repatriated);

People living in remote or isolated areas.

The agro-climatic context of Haiti in 2020, characterized by below-normal rainfall, the deterioration of the economic situation and the Covid-19 have contributed to the increase in the number of people in food insecurity Phase 3 (Crisis) and Phase 4 (Emergency).

Access to health care and to water, hygiene and sanitation services has been reduced due in particular to the pandemic, causing a decline in immunization activities, an increase in cases of diarrheal diseases, the main cause of malnutrition in children under 5 and increased maternal mortality.

During the 2019-2020 school year, 4 million children were deprived of access to school and often left in the care of their parents, which could generate tensions within families and increase protection risks for children. The number of teenage pregnancies and cases of gender-based violence (GBV) is also said to have increased in 2020.

The strengthening of the measures put in place in the main host countries [diaspora] due to the impact of Covid-19 on the economy of these countries, job losses, the fear of being infected has caused the return of many Haitian migrants in their country [more than 200,000 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32074-haiti-flash-voluntary-returns-of-nearly-200-000-haitians-in-9-months.html ]. Despite this, the deportations and repatriations did not stop during the year 2020 https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-33039-haiti-usa-500-haitians-repatriated-to-haiti-trump-or-biden-nothing-changes.html https://www.haitilibre.com/en/news-32711-haiti-bahamas-74-haitians-in-an-irregular-migratory-situation-repatriated.html ...

Financial requirements for the Humanitarian Response Plan (published in March 2021) are estimated at $235.6 million. For the record in 2020, the estimated needs were $ 472 million but the international community contributed only $ 156.9 million (33%)...
