Haiti - Reconstruction : End of mission of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities

Berry Vrbanovic, the President of the Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) (1), concluded today a tour of Haiti as part of a mission for the Haiti-Canada Municipal Cooperation Project (MCP).

The MCP results from a strong commitment to solidarity and a co-ordinated effort by both the Canadian and international municipal sectors. These initiatives are aimed at providing meaningful help to local Haitian governments; efforts which will ultimately lead to an improved quality of life for the Haitian people," declared Mr. Vrbanovic for who "Canadian municipalities have a leading role to play in rebuilding Haiti. They help by sharing knowledge, expertise and experiences with their Haitian counterparts."

The MCP is being jointly deployed by FCM, the UMQ and the City of Montreal, with financial assistance from the Canadian International Development Agency (CIDA). It seeks to restore and enhance basic administrative and institutional capacities in Gressier, Léogane, Grand-Goâve and Petit-Goâve Communes, which make up the Région des Palmes, as well as in the city of Port-au-Prince. The program also supports the Fédération Nationale des Mairies d'Haïti (FENAMH), the Fédération Nationale des CASEC (FENACAH) and the Ministère de l'Intérieur et des Collectivités Territoriales (MICT).

The MCP coordinates its various activities in the Région des Palmes and with the two Haitian community federations, with the Association of Netherlands Municipalities (ANM) and Cités unies France (CUF) to ensure optimal use of international cooperation funds.

(1)The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) has been the national voice of municipal government since 1901, and represents close to 90 per cent of the Canadian population - more than 2000 municipal governments across the country.
