Update : We just learned that Frank Jean-Baptiste was released this afternoon by the National Police of Haiti (PNH). Frantz Lerebours, spokesman for the PNH indicates that a ransom of $300,000 was demanded but no payment was made.

The Commissioner François Dossous, Head of the Unit Against Kidnapping in Haiti, officially confirmed yesterday Monday, the kidnapping of Frank Jean-Baptiste, an U.S. citizen last Friday.

Frank Jean-Baptiste, married to the director of a prestigious private school (Union School) for children of diplomats and rich Haitian, was kidnapped at his home by men who identified themselves as employees of a package delivery service.

Police Commissioner Dossous, declared that the authorities were currently working to to obtain the release of Frank Jean-Baptiste, without providing further details for security reasons.

The National Police of Haiti launched since Friday a vast operation of research in the areas of Pétion-ville and strengthened, together with the peacekeepers, the checkpoints to Port-au-Prince, where two people including a girl of 6 years have also been kidnapped in recent days.

The U.S. Embassy calls on all American citizens working in Haiti to remain vigilant.
