Yesterday the Senate Commission Justice and Security presented to the Assembly of the Senate its report of recruitment of judges for the Court of Cassation. From the list of 34 candidates, 18 personalities have been selected by the Senate. This list will be submitted to the President of the Republic, Michel Martelly, who will choose six of them to complete the members of the Court of Cassation.

The 18 personalities selected are :

Calixte Pierre F. Patrick, Judge of the Court of Appeals

Jean François N. Almicar, Judge of the Court of Appeals

Mehu Milius Garçon, Lawyer - former Senator

Jean Pierre L. Pressoir, Judge of the Court of Appeals

Pierre Armand, President of the Court of Appeal

Bergromme François Fouchard, Lawyer – former Senator

Anel Alexis Joseph, President of the Court of Appeal

Jean Louis Carlo, investigating judge

Paul J. Perez, investigating judge

Gary Paul Angrand, Dean First Instance

Morency Joseph, investigating judge

Malette Thiers, Lawyer

Sen. Youri Latortue, President of the Senate Commission Justice and Security indicated for his part yesterday "So the assembly voted for these 18 names, we will submit them tomorrow to the President of the Republic through the Ministry of Justice and according to the schedule by September 15 the President must appoint the judges, a week after he chose the President of the Court of Cassation. During this time the Ministry of Justice will make elections for the remaining members, for the members missing at the Supreme Council of the Judiciary (Conseil supérieur du Pouvoir Judiciaire - CSPJ) and on October 3 we will install this council to other premises and the budget of the Ministry of Justice which was allocated to DSPJ will be transferred, as well as equipment and administrative staff, to the Superior Council of the Judiciary."

The Senator Latortue also gave details of how the choice was made "to be appojnted to the Court of Cassation whether the person was a judge of the Court of Appeal and served 5 years or it is a lawyer who has advocated for 10 years. So in that sense I think the priority has been given mainly to judges of Court of Appeals that have exceeded 7 years. We selected four judges of courts of first instance and five personalities who are lawyers, and above all who were law professor, former Senator, or former Minister as Me Dorleans. Me Thiers Malette was rejected because he has 79 years, he has the age for retirement..."
