In its latest Haiti Food Security Outlook, Famine Early Warning Systems Network (FEWS NET), the international famine early warning network, warns that widespread food insecurity in the Crisis will persist, exacerbated by violence, food price inflation, and internal displacement, through January 2025.

Crisis (IPC Phase 3) and Emergency (IPC Phase 4) outcomes are expected in Haiti through September 2024. This is due to food inflation of around 40% and persistent insecurity, which is disrupting supply chains. Despite forecasts of minimal seasonal improvements in prices and food availability following the spring harvest, low-income households are expected to continue to face significant challenges in meeting their food needs.

Crisis (IPC Phase 3) and Emergency (IPC Phase 4) outcomes will persist between October 2024 and January 2025.

Very poor households in urban and rural areas and displaced persons are the most affected. However, an improvement from Crisis (IPC Phase 3) to Stress (Phase 2) is expected in the communes of the South, Southeast, North, West, and Center.

Cash transfers from migrants during the end-of-year festivities will increase incomes, stimulating the resumption of economic activities, including small informal trade and improved traffic on major roads.

The areas of concern are the districts of Port-au-Prince, Croix-des-Bouquets, and La Gonâve in the West department, Môle-Saint-Nicolas in the Lower North-West, Saint-Marc in Artibonite, and Baradères in Nippes. The commune of Cité Soleil remains the only commune in Emergency (IPC Phase 4).

Emergency food assistance is insufficient to meet needs. From January to March 2024, the total number of beneficiaries of emergency food assistance represents less than 4%. of the total population, a trend that is expected to continue until January 2025. However, the population in need is expected to be between 2.0 and 2.5 million people until January 2025.
