Haiti - FLASH : U-turn, countries open to equipping the FAd’H

The 16th Conference of Defense Ministers of the Americas (CMDA) ended on October 16 in Mendoza, Argentina. At the end of this conference, the defense ministers initialed the Mendoza Declaration, a document that reaffirms their commitment to strengthening regional cooperation in security and defense, both conventional and non-conventional. Also, the countries commit to providing unwavering support to Haiti in managing its security situation in respect and in close collaboration with the Haitian Government.

On the sidelines of this conference, Jean Marc Berthier Antoine, the Haitian Minister of Defense, had fruitful bilateral meetings with several partners in the region, including the United States, Canada, Mexico, Argentina and the Bahamas. These fruitful discussions opened up new perspectives for cooperation in the field of defense, particularly around the modernization project of the Haitian Armed Forces (FAd’H).

These fruitful exchanges have opened up new perspectives such as possibilities for training and equipping the army with equipment by partners who previously expressed certain reservations.

Following his participation in the CMDA, Minister Antoine will soon travel to Washington for a series of meetings with senior officials from the Pentagon, the Organization of American States (OAS) and the Inter-American Defense Board. During these discussions, the Minister will highlight the considerable efforts undertaken by the FAd'H to restore peace and security. He will present an army that has broken with past practices and is committed to respecting human rights and international humanitarian law.

Minister Antoine will take advantage of this opportunity to advocate for access to modern equipment that is essential to better support law enforcement in the fight against armed gangs.
