Haiti - Social : Partial Assessment of Heavy Rains

Monday, following the recent floods caused by heavy rains that fell on the Nord-West, the Centre and the Artibonite, in the night on the night of Friday 14 to Saturday, June 15, 2013, President Michel Martelly had a meeting of evaluation of mainly affected zones.

The meeting, which took place in the presence, among others, of the Prime Minister, Laurent Salvador Lamothe, avid Bazile, Minister of Interior and Territorial Communities, Wilson Laleau, inister of Economy and Finance and members of presidential Cabinet, lso aimed to ensure that all measures of effective prevention had been taken by the Government to protect the lives and goods of the population in the climatic season at risk which began June 1.

While reassuring the population that the Government will take all necessary steps to ensure its afety during this season, the Head of State has invited the population to remain vigilant and to comply with all instructions of the competent authorities.

The latest assessment reported 873 people evacuated and at least two people are missing (Saint Louis du Nord and Hinche), a record that could rise pending the reports of 4 communal sections of Hinche.

At the entrance to the town of Hinche, the flood of rivers Guayamouk and Hinquitte has caused serious losses to agriculture flooding among other large area of plantations of corn and peas. The rivers ort-de-Paix, Vieux Joux, Rio Frio, Desgranges and Barres are also entered in flood. Several livestock washouts were reported. In Port-de-Paix, the drinking water system is turned off. A protective wall erected on the banks of the river Desgranges in Saint-Louis-du-Nord collapsed. Road infrastructure were also damaged (sections Hinche-Colladère/Cerca-Cavajal and Hinche-Papaya).
