Haiti - Economy : Index of Consumer Prices, May 2013

The level of the General Index of Consumer Prices (base 100 in August 2004), increased in May from the previous month, from 207.5 to 208.5 a monthly increase of 0.5% for a 7.3% yoy.

This monthly increase is the result of the upward trend in all functions of consumption. Among the largest increases, we note "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" (+ 0.5%), "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" (+ 0.7%), "Management, equipment maintenance of housing" (+ 0.9%) and "Transport" (+ 1.0%).

The increase in function "Food, Beverages and Tobacco" is attributable to higher prices of products such as rice (+1.7%), millet (+1.1%), corn in grain (+3.1%), ground corn (+1.4%), beef (+1.5%), pork (+1.6%), goat meat (+0.9%), chicken (+1.3%), ham (+1.8% ), fresh fish (+0.7%), cheese (+1.5%), eggs (+1.5%), coconut (+5.0%), avocado (+5.4%), dry beans (+0.9%), yam (+2.2%), potatoes (+1.5%), potatoes (+3.3%), orange (+1.6%), grapefruit (+2.0%), the coffee powder (+1.2%) and the treated water (+5.6%).

The increase in the index "Clothing, Textiles and Footwear" results essentially from the increase in tissue (1.1%), costume (Universal jacket) (0.9%), dress (2.1%), petticoat (1.6% ) and garment (1.0%).

The increase in the "Management, equipment maintenance of housing" comes of bed linen (3.2%), the tablecloth (0.8%), disinfectant (1.3%) and wages of domestic workers (2.4%).

Finally, the upward trend in the index of "Transport" is only linked to the behavior of the motor vehicle (+0.5%) and public transport (+1.5%).

General Price Index by Region (Variation on a month) :

Metropolitan Area : +0.5% (Including Port-au-Prince, of Delmas, of Pétion-Ville, of Carrefour and of the Croix des Bouquets.)

West remains : +0.9% (includes the departments of East and West excluding the Metropolitan Area)

North : +0.6% (including the departments of North, Northeast and Northwest)

South : 0.3% (including the departments of South Grande'Anse and Nippes)

Transversal : +0.8% (including the departments of Centre and the Artibonite)
