Haiti - Climate : Strong tropical wave, yellow vigilance on Haiti

A strong tropical wave associated with a low pressure center was located about 1,000 km east southeast of the West Indies this morning. This system could become a hurricane (90%) in the next 48 hours. The trajectory models, show that it should pass near the southern coast of Haiti on Sunday night and Monday. The passage of this disturbance near the southern coast of Haiti could generate gusty winds, scattered showers and thunderstorms especially for regions south of Haiti from Sunday evening.

To this end, the Permanent Secretariat of Risk Management and Disaster (SPGRD) launches this Friday, October 29, 2010 at 10:00am the yellow level of vigilance (impact risk mild to moderate) to heavy rains in the Emergency National Plan threatsof gusty winds and thunderstorms, scattered showers with a risk of flooding of rivers, landslides and low-intensity flooding in particular on the departments of South-East, West, South, Nippes and Grande Anse.

The National Meteorological Center (CCNM) in conjunction with the SPGRD and Direction of Civil protection (DPC) is asking the public living in the risk areas, to remain vigilant and strictly implement the safety precautions in case of strong winds, flooding, mudslides, landslides and severe thunderstorms (lightning and thunder).
